PELATO AL 150%

Galliani non teme confronti: Il Milan è il re del mercato.

[Gazzetta.it] Adriano Galliani non ci sta.

WHAT IS SO SPECAL ABOUT CARLO?

June 9 - AC Milan's Carlo has turned the job down twice now I think, but like a burning rash on your rude bits, Ancelotti just won't go away. Ironic, considering his name sounds a lot like the kind of cream a chemist would sell you to deal with a said embarrassing rash. Though the bookies have him at around third or forth favourite right now, I'd still put him as "number one most likely" to be the next Chelsea gaffer. Roman seems hooked on him. But why is he so obsessed? What's this Ancelotti all about?

Well, I've had a quick sniff through the Pies archives, and found out what there is to know about this chubby faced spaghetti chomper. His file makes good reading.

Despite looking older than a Routemaster double decker bus, Ancelotti isn't actually that ancient. I can remember him playing alongside ex Chelsea gaffer Mr Vialli in Italia '90, my favourite of all World Cups (I'm too young to remember '66). Despite not even being 50 yet, he's squeezed a lot of managerial success into his time.

Like The Special One, Ancelotti made his name in management with a teeny weeny club from the Italian lower leagues. In one year with A.C. Reggiana 1919 (who change their name all the time and might have been called something different back then) he got them promotion to Serie A.

He then went to his old playing club Parma where (thanks to Buffon in the nets) he won the UEFA Cup. Cue the old lady, or Juventus as she's known outside of Turin. Carlo's time at Juve wasn't great (though he didn't finish second in the league twice - good by any other Italian club's standards).

In 2001 he jumped shop to AC, and quickly became a saggy faced legend. Thanks to a certain Mr Shevchenko (remember him? The world's greatest striker, went to some club for a daft fee, and then vanished never to be seen again) won the Champions League in absolute style (twice). He of course also came runner up against Liverpool another time, bagged the Coppa Italia and took home the Scudetto a hatful of times.

Frankly the way he got his team to bounce back after that soul crushing Liverpool defeat would be worth a knighthood alone in England. The more I think about it, the more he seems a good choice. Ancelotti bases his teams around superb goalkeepers (just think what he could do with Cech) and rock solid defences (the one thing Chelsea already have). He also might be able to get the best out of Sheva. He certainly did before...

CHELSEA IN BATTLE OF WILLS WITH MILAN OVER DROGBA AND SHEVCHENKO

June 9, 2008 - Chelsea and AC Milan are engaged in a battle of wills over Didier Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko. Less than a week after squabbling over Carlo Ancelotti, who dealt Chelsea a huge blow by rejecting an offer of £7 million a year to stay in charge at Milan, the clubs are haggling over transfer fees for two of the most expensive strikers in European football.

Chelsea are happy to allow their two biggest signings to move on, but only for the right price. Milan sources said yesterday that the clubs had agreed a fee for the Ivory Coast striker, based on an initial down payment of £10 million, rising to £18 million during a three-year contract, but such claims brought an angry denial from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea value Drogba at £30 million and insist that they will hold out for such a fee, particularly because he has three years remaining on a contract that was signed midway through last season.

The 30-year-old has been Chelsea’s leading striker for the past four seasons, but many at the club have become tired of his petulant attitude, exemplified by his sending-off in the Champions League final defeat by Manchester United last month.

The clubs are even farther apart on Shevchenko, who has scored only nine league goals for Chelsea since his signing two years ago. The 31-year-old has suffered a series of knee and back injuries, but his biggest problem appears to have been getting used to the physical demands of the Barclays Premier League, particularly because he has lost much of the pace that he had earlier in his career.

However, Shevchenko has many admirers at the San Siro after scoring 127 goals in 208 appearances in Serie A during a seven-year spell at the club and has retained a close relationship with Silvio Berlusconi, the Milan owner, who is the godfather to his eldest son, Jordan.

Adriano Galliani, the Milan vice-president, has been instructed to secure Shevchenko’s return but has not offered a transfer fee, instead proposing to take him on loan for a season and pay a proportion of his £130,000-a-week wages. Chelsea used a similar deal to get the high-earning Hernán Crespo and Juan Sebastián Verón off the wage bill in the past (Crespo went on loan to Milan then Inter, Verón also went to Inter), but they are adamant that Shevchenko will not leave for nothing.

The Ukraine striker has become an embarrassment to Roman Abramovich, who brokered the deal personally, with the Russian desperate to recoup part of the £30 million transfer fee.

“Chelsea have authorised us to open negotiations with Drogba,” Galliani said. “Unfortunately, the response we feared came for Shevchenko. Chelsea consider Andriy unsellable. This epilogue makes us very sad.”

Chelsea will continue working to secure a new manager this week, with Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach, in pole position after last week’s rejection from Ancelotti, who the club claimed demanded too much money. The Brazilian has indicated his interest and would be a popular appointment, particularly among the Chelsea’s three Portuguese players, who have thrived under his leadership of the national squad.

“If you talk about the top teams, they don’t only want good players but a top manager as well,” Paulo Ferreira, the Portugal and Chelsea defender, said about the Brazilian. “He’s a good manager, so why not? I would like him, but he will not say anything until after the tournament. He has been an international manager for five or six years, but before that he was at a lot of clubs, so we know he can do it.”

SHEVCHENKO KEEPS ANCELOTTI AT TOP OF CHELSEA TARGETS

10 June 2008 - Andrei Shevchenko has become an important figure in the recruitment of the next Chelsea manager and is believed to be one of the driving forces behind the club owner Roman Abramovich's continued interest in hiring Milan's Carlo Ancelotti.

The 31-year-old striker is one of several people Abramovich has consulted over the recruitment of a new coach and is understood to have urged him to carry on with his pursuit of the man he played under at Milan, despite being rebuffed last week.

Originally Abramovich had only intended to speak to Ancelotti to ask him his opinion on who he should appoint but, under the advice of Shevchenko among others, he decided to offer the 48-year-old the post.

Milan remain bullish that Ancelotti will stay with them and sources claim it is "incredibly difficult" to make anyone leave the club if they don't want to sell – as Chelsea, ironically, found out in their long pursuit of Shevchenko.

Given the peripheral role the Ukrainian has played at Stamford Bridge – he fell out with Jose Mourinho and played only a minor part in Avram Grant's time at the club – it is a remarkable testimony to the admiration Abramovich has for him that he has been consulted over the next manager.

Approaching Ancelotti – chief executive Peter Kenyon returned to Italy at the weekend although that may also have been to do with Didier Drogba's proposed transfer to Milan – has caused tension at Chelsea as some senior figures believe the club should be concentrating fully on other targets.

Milan are interested in taking Shevchenko back but Chelsea – having spent £31m on the striker two years ago – would only be interested if they offered a transfer fee which is currently not part of the proposed deal.

Many at Chelsea are urging him to appoint Luiz Felipe Scolari and it is significant that the Russian has been spending time in Switzerland where the Portuguese are based for Euro 2008. Scolari has also allowed the agent Jorge Mendes free rein of the team hotel in Neuchatel.

Scolari has the public backing of Chelsea's Portuguese players – Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira – and would not have a problem working under the conditions that Abramovich is proposing for the new manager. He wants someone who can explain team selections to him and have an open dialogue as well as a charismatic, disciplinarian coach.

GALLIANI SU SHEVA, 11 giugno 2008
